A. W. Burrage

The Handwriting Lady

At a young age the lines and curves in handwriting appealed to me and this led to a question, why does our handwriting look different from one another. The journey down this path of discovery revealed that there is an entire branch of study devoted to the translation and interpretation of the very strokes we make and the impact they have in our lives. Our handwriting is a window into who we are as a person and even into our past since the past defines who we are in the present.

For those that are interested in the study of Graphology/Graphoanalysis , formal certifications can be acquired through organizations such as the International Graphoanalysis Society (IGAS). I received my certification in 2000 through this particular organization and am recognized as a Certified Graphoanalyst.

Another organization is the Learning Without Tears program. This is the brainchild of Jan Olsen, an occupational therapist who in 1977 realized she could leverage her training and background to develop strategies that would facilitate making handwriting more adaptable to those that have struggled due to a learning disability or a physical handicap. I received a certification with them as a Handwriting Specialist in 2013 and have since applied the skills learned to benefit my local community through teaching.

Additionally, there are many institutions that those looking to take part in the study of handwriting analysis can join, three of which I am a member and that I have found most rewarding are:

the International Graphoanalysis Society (IGAS) which was mentioned prior as well as the American Association of Handwriting Analysis (AAHA) and American Handwriting Analysis Foundation (AHAF)

The training and skill that I have acquired through the above-mentioned organizations and programs can be also utilized in aspects beyond the obvious.

Below are a few of the avenues these skills are utilized in: Law Enforcement, Health and Wellness, Childrens Services, Education, Business and The Military
